🔓 Travelodge's CEO resigns over a security failure that tech could’ve prevented

The CEO of Travelodge steps down after months of pressure over how the group handled a sexual assault case at one of its UK properties back in 2022.

The former CFO, Ray Reidy, is now serving as interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent replacement. The case involved a man who talked front desk staff into handing over a female guest's key card by falsely claiming to be in a relationship with her.

Travelodge now requires explicit guest permission before issuing extra or replacement keys and just finished a UK wide deadbolt audit. Despite all this, first half 2026 revenue still grew 4.2% to £491.3 million, helped by a strong London events calendar and 22% growth in Spain.

The worst part is that mobile key technology would've made this specific scam much harder to pull off, since there's no physical card to hand across the desk in the first place. That said, 100% security never exists, tech just helps you mitigate some risks. And if a CEO resigns over something like this, it's safe to assume a receptionist, a front office manager, and probably a GM already lost their jobs long before we ever knew about this.

This is the classic social engineering attack, not a hacked keycard system. Someone lied convincingly enough that staff handed over access they shouldn't have. Social engineering attacks happen on a daily basis in hotels around the world. I personally was a target of this technique (social engineering I mean, not handing over keycards) when I worked as a hotel receptionist. By the way, some of them had funny outcomes (admittedly others weren’t so funny).

🔎 Google launches its new AI booking feature…

Google just turns AI Mode into a booking channel. Guests can describe a trip in plain English right inside Google Search, get a visual list of matching hotels with side by side comparisons, pick a room, and pay through a "Continue on Google" flow using Google Pay.

The hotel or booking platform stays the merchant of record and still handles customer service, so Google isn't quite inserting itself as a new OTA. It's inserting itself as the front door.

So what does this mean for independent hotels? Nothing, for now. Only chains and major travel sites with big engines are part of this initial rollout, so nothing changes for independents today. But that "for now" is important though.

AI systems pull from whatever structured data they can find about your property, so don’t wait for an invite from Google, and make sure your hotel's information, rates, amenities, and policies are clean, consistent, and structured the same way across every channel you're already on.

🏨 … and names its first hotel partners: Hilton, Marriott, IHG, and Choice

Google's new AI hotel booking mode rollout will include very famous names like Hilton, Marriott International, IHG Hotels & Resorts, and Choice Hotels.

And speaking of Choice Hotels (and about interim CEOs while we’re at it), the company just ratified Dominic Dragisich as its permanent president and CEO after being elected as interim a few months ago.

INTEGRATIONS

🔌 Stayntouch integrates with Namastay: connecting Namastay's tech directly to the Stayntouch PMS so reservations, rates, and guest data sync in real time. [Link]

Namastay is a booking engine, so Stayntouch looks to offer one more option to its customers for automating direct booking into the PMS.

🔌 GuestRevu integrates with Access Collins: pulling reservation data from the hospitality booking software to automatically send guest feedback surveys after a visit. [Link]

This means that a guest walking out without passing by reception can submit their feedback actually landing somewhere useful.

🔌 ExplorUS consolidates six systems onto Cloudbeds: unifying hotels, restaurants, retail, camping, and marinas across 30 parks nationwide onto a single platform. [Link]

Parks are also an attractive segment. Turns out that a modern PMS can be used to manage cabins as well.

PRODUCT UPDATES

🆕 Expedia rolls out its biggest Vrbo and Escapia update: 12 new tools land, including global Sponsored Listings, a redesigned Escapia reservation grid and new cancellation options. [Link]

Sponsored Listings are similar to Booking's Preferred Partner program, so it's another paid lever vacation rental managers can use.

🆕 Lighthouse launches Ernest Crews: dedicated teams of AI specialists embed with hotel commercial teams to get its Ernest AI teammate running in 30 to 60 days. [Link]

It's basically implementation consulting bundled with the software, a sign that AI adoption in hotels still needs experienced help to actually stick.

🆕 Sirvoy adds a website builder to every plan: hotels can connect a custom domain and take direct bookings straight from their own site. [Link]

How to add direct booking into a hotel’s website is one of the most frequent questions I receive from independent hotels.
